Learning to Fly – Children Explore the Natural Sciences

Through the “Learning to Fly” programme, pre- and elementary school children are able to acquire knowledge about the world, particularly the about natural sciences through exploring the themes of “air” and “flying”. Joint learning centres, each consisting of a kindergarten and an elementary school, have been set up to explore these themes. The learning centres, accompanied by the Elementary School Learning Centre from the Humboldt University in Berlin, are set up so that the children are inspired to ask questions and take their own approaches to explorative learning. In this setting, the children have the opportunity to try out different ways of solving problems while expanding their knowledge.
An important part of the programme is the training and counselling for accompanying educators and teachers. They learn how a child-centred learning environment should look, how to identify the help children need, and when and how they should get it. The Berlin pilot projects will be documented and made available to other educational institutes to encourage them, together with partners, to discover child-centred methods to bring the natural sciences closer to children.
