School+plus – Pupils Empower Experts.
Experts Empower Pupils.

Pupils need more than what normal school lessons can offer. The “School+plus” programme supports projects that have been developed by pupils themselves. The twist is that although the projects take place in the school, they do not take place under normal school conditions (no grades, no tests, no curriculum). Furthermore, the pupils are allowed to choose a teacher (expert) to guide them. The programme pays for the remuneration of the expert. The experts can be another teacher or somebody from a completely different branch. The most important thing is that he or she must provide some added value for the future job perspectives of the pupils. Institutes or potential experts can also develop projects – not only the schools.

Detlef Semrau, 41, an architect and expert from the Schule+plus programme from Stralsund says, “The best thing would be if a pupil were to say in the future, ‘Hey, what I learnt back then was really useful’”.  Almost everything is possible: setting up a record company, producing brochures, organising bus trips, practising presentation skills, experimenting in laboratories, installing IT-networks, and even learning the tricks of a make-up artist. Over 300 projects have already been funded in the first round (2004/5), drawing the participation of more than 3,000 students, 300 experts, 140 institutions and exactly 140 schools.
