Learning and Living Democracy
Over the course of four years, students and teachers at 15 schools received support in transforming their schools into places for students to experience democracy first hand. As part of the program, the Service Agency in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania encouraged schools to cooperate with each other and make use of other support systems to carry out their reform projects. Since program funding was phased out in spring 2007, the Service Agency has been working to secure the wealth of experiences accumulated during the program. In addition, a professional development program for democracy educators was launched earlier this year by the Mecklenburg-Western Pomeranian Ministry of Education in cooperation with the state’s Protestant and Catholic churches.
